Meet the ESL Staff


Karen provides ESL and Bilingual-Spanish services to students at Silas Willard Elementary School. Karen most recently taught ESL at GHS and prior to that  at Carl Sandburg College for almost 30 years.  During most of that time she was also the Carl Sandburg College Literacy Coalition Coordinator and trained volunteer tutors who have been working with nonnative and native Adult English Speakers.  Her masters is in Education: Reading

Renee provides ESL and Bilingual-Spanish services to students at Steele Elementary School. Renee has 28 years of teaching experience; the past 4 of which have been in District #205.  She's a graduate of Galesburg High School, a mother of two teenage boys, and a passionate amateur photographer.

 Kari Caldwell
Kari has worked in Galesburg CUSD #205 since 2000, first as a middle school Outreach Worker, and now as an ESL teacher at Lombard Middle School.  Kari holds a BSEd from Illinois State University and has completed her MSEd and ESL endorsement from University of Illinois Springfield.  Because of her extensive background in the field of Outreach and her own life experiences, her vision is to empower students to overcome adversity and to help them develop independence so that they can have a secure future. She lives with her husband and daughter in Galesburg.  She also has two grown children who attended Galesburg schools, as well as a new grandson. She loves spending time with her family, playing with her two dogs, going to garage sales, and traveling.

 Libby Heidt
Libby is an ESL teacher at Nielson Elementary Schools.  This is her fourth year of teaching in District 205, as she previously taught in the orange room at Bright Futures and also in a PK blended classroom.  Libby is certified to teach PreK-3 and holds a special education endorsement.  She attended the University of Cincinnati where she received a bachelor's degree in Art History and also a master's degree in Early Childhood Education from the College of Mount St. Joseph.  Libby is pursuing her ESL endorsement from Aurora University

Jessica Jones Jessica is the ESL teacher at Churchill Junior High School.  She has been teaching for 10 years and has spent the last 7 years teaching fourth grade at Nielson Elementary School.  Jessica has her Bachelor's Degree from Knox College and her Master's Degree in Reading from Western Illinois University, where she is also pursuing her ESL endorsement.  In her free time, Jessica provides instruction to our non-native English Language speaking adults and enjoys running and spending time with her dogs and cats.

Tess Newhall Tess is a PreK and ESL classroom teacher at Bright Futures Preschool in the orange room.  She is meeting the English Language needs of our youngest students with her innovative teaching strategies and passion for early childhood and language acquisition.

Tica provides ESL services to students at Steele  Elementary School. She was born in Cuba and is fluent in Spanish. Tica is available for Bilingual-Spanish translation and interpretation for all families and students in District 205.

John is the Parent & Family Liaison for all English as a Second Language families in District 205.  John takes the lead as facilitator for our Bilingual Parent Advisory Committees as well as supports all non-native English speaking families with new student registration.  John also provides any language support that may be needed, in particular for French/Lingala and Spanish translation and interpretation.

Scott Rasso

Scott has worked in Galesburg CUSD #205 since 2004 and provides ESL services to students at Galesburg High School. He is also also the lead teacher for the EL Program. He holds a BSEd from Illinois State University and an MSEd from Western Illinois University. He has earned his credential as a Literacy Lessons Tutor through National Louis University. He is currently studying Communication Science & Disorders through Utah State University's online program. He believes that learning should inspire and empower one to grow and develop throughout one's professional and personal lives. He is a passionate Chicago sports fan, he loves reading, fishing, traveling, cooking, riding roller coasters, ballroom dancing, and playing video games. His children Rafael and Dominique are the greatest things to ever happen to him.

Dee is the ESL teacher at Nielson  Elementary School.  She has been teaching for 17 years, all with district 205 schools.  Dee taught 3rd grade at Steele Elementary for six  years and was a Reading Recovery and Title I Interventionist for the next nine years at Nielson. Dee has a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and Speech Pathology, with endorsements in Early Childhood/Special Education, Reading Intervention, and English as a Second Language.  She also holds a Master's Degree in Audiology and Reading.  Dee has been married for 32 years to Russell, who also works for district 205 in the Music Department.  They spend their free time maintaining the family's Centennial Farm in rural New Windsor.  Dee and Russ have two grown children who are both married.  Cait and her husband, Dylan live in Arkansa where she works in social media and he is in the Air Force.  Nolan and his wife Kristin live in Illinois where he farms/drives a truck and she is a labor and delivery room nurse.  Dee enjoys spending time reading and writing, with several small published works  and loves to walk in the woods with their dogs and volunteering with the Miss Illinois Scholarship Program.

Tiffany Tepach Tiffany provides ESL instruction to students at Gale Elementary School.  She received her B.A.  from Western Illinois University and is currently working towards her ESL endorsement also from WIU.

 Alejandro Varela  Alejandro provides ESL instruction to the students at King Elementary School.  He is from Arizona and moved to Illinois to attend Knox College.  Alejandro has been teaching for five years, with four years teaching 3rd grade.  He is a big fan of Arizona Diamondbacks baseball, coaching wrestling, and playing with his two dogs.
